When I find something interesting, enjoyable, or necessary I sometimes become obsessed. I mine deeper and deeper for the most precious gems. I want to own the things I invest my time in, not rent them. I don’t want to be a tourist. Like every sport or hobby, fly fishing has a culture, a depth … Continue reading

Musing on The Optimist
I came to know David Coggins through Instagram. As a “brand” he wanders into my feed, from the AI, “something you might like”. He is suggested-liked-commented upon by “my people”. He’s a writer, a sharp and interesting fellow I observe in those little squares every other day or so. He is of folk and celebrity … Continue reading
On Private Water
It was a golf cabin and he was a golfer. I’m not a golfer. He said bring, “bring your rod, there’s a little fishing on the golf course- maybe you can show me something- we have permits to fish it- it’s private.” This is when I termed the phrase, WHORE HOUSE FISHING. It was the same experience I had 15 years prior. Pellet feed, no one around, absolute monsters. Whore house fishing because your paid for it. Continue reading
Fly Fishing: Etiquette and Ethics
This weekend, I slid down to the Carolina Coast with my family. I didn’t bring my lap top along and I’m anxious because Figuring I wouldn’t keep pace with my recent weekly installment of Sunday fly fishing posts for BigHaintBlue. We’ve had a pleasant long weekend with perfect June weather. I’ve had a chance to … Continue reading
Fly Fishing 101: Rod and Reel
There was something magical about putting my very own baseball glove on my hand for the first time. Before I bought it, I was a guy that … Continue reading

Outfitted to Fish: A Long Post on the Basics I’ve been fishing long enough and consistently enough a few people have asked me what kind of gear to buy to be able to start fly fishing for trout. Somehow or another this has been a request for a shopping list, often from a buddy that’s … Continue reading

In the coming weeks, I’m writing a little about fly-fishing basics. Let’s say a series from a lifelong novice for a novice. To begin, if you are inclined, I’ll share my story in the sport…. In the summer of 1989, months before turning fifteen years old with no credit card or cell phone, I took … Continue reading
Snapper
When I was a senior in high school, I learned to fly fish with my dad in the mountains of North Carolina. We had a place up on Beech Mountain and I guess because A River Runs Through It just came out we had to do what every white guy it America was doing- big … Continue reading
The Gambler and the Pata-Guccis
There was a silver fox, flocked in a surly beard and thick mud flap around his collar that reminded me of Kenny Rogers. He was right there in the Desperation Pool. When we pulled up in the truck, there were only about four or five cars in the upper lot– the Subaru over on the … Continue reading
All Those Old Rods
My son left his stick on the lacrosse field. He beat himself up because every last penny of his allowance for the whole summer went into that thing. He spent hours looking among the internet and asking players from the local college, which shaft? which head? how do I lace it? He soaked it the … Continue reading
